Elanjimuttam, Trivandrum

A de-route from the Trivandrum – Kollam National Highway in the soothing Kakamoola area, leads one to the cause-way in the Vellayani Lake; a picturesque setting to Col. Nair and his wife’s house. With one of the rare fresh water lakes in the country as a backdrop, the house stands newly constructed with all modern facilities.

Built on the erstwhile royal land of the Maharaja of Travancore, the house is in the midst of luscious green surroundings. A narrow path in front of the house bifurcates a small garden from the main building. Here, the owners have built a small pond for their only daughter, who is now an admired author and lives inParis. An array of plants and tropical fruit trees keep the couple busy with their upkeep.

A separate entrance for the guests guides them to the first floor of the house, from where the view is even more breathtaking. Two spacious rooms with wide windows overlook the large expanse of water. A bright sunny self sufficient kitchenette is perfect for to sit and eat in as well, as the natural light seeps in through its transparent roof. One can find an elusive corner in the two- leveled terrace for some peaceful time alone. The bougainvillea clad terrace is the most charming feature of the house.

It’s almost imperative that with an army background, the hosts are dog lovers and allow guests to bring in their pets. Their own duo, though, is spritely but well disciplined.
